Rail and Mass Transit
We're working with railway companies and network owners across Europe to enable the deployment of high-capacity fibre infrastructure, leading the way to digitalisation and improved passenger experiences.

We're helping rail embrace its digital future.
Fujikura fibre technology is revolutionising railway communications.
The railway industry is on the cusp of a digital revolution. Our fibre optic technology, spearheaded by Spider Web Ribbon® (SWR®) is changing the network communications landscape within rail and mass transit industries throughout Europe. The demand for high-bandwidth, low-latency networks capable of supporting critical applications like signalling, traffic control, and passenger services has never been greater. These networks are key to increasing network capacity, system security and offering advanced passenger services like high quality uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity.
The transition from GSM-R to FRMCS (Future Rail Mobile Communication System) marks a significant leap, enabling railways to move beyond traditional telecom systems to IP-based networks supporting 5G connectivity and beyond. Our SWR technology plays a pivotal role in this evolution because it facilitates high-density fibre deployment alongside rail tracks. Unlike traditional loose tube cables, SWR technology allows for mass fusion splicing of up to 12 fibres at once, drastically reducing installation time, meaning that fibre backbones on the rail network can be built faster.
By deploying high fibre count backbone networks, rail operators can achieve unparalleled bandwidth, reliability, and efficiency. This infrastructure supports a wide array of applications, including moving block signalling, driverless operations, real-time train communications, and remote asset monitoring. It enhances passenger experiences with amenities like uninterrupted Wi-Fi, infotainment, and ticketless travel. On top of this, spare fibre can open the door to additional revenue streams like dark fibre lease, telecom services, diversifying the business model of railway and transit clients.
Our commitment to innovation and reliability is underscored by its stringent adherence to global standards and an extensive track record with prominent railway and metro clients, infrastructure managers and public transit authorities worldwide. As a member of UNIFE and the UK Railway Industry Association, we are dedicated to facilitating the rail industry’s technological capabilities and operational efficiencies.
As the rail industry moves into a new era of innovation based on digital technology, it requires network infrastructure capable of supporting the high-speed data transfer which underpins such a digital step forward. Because fibre backbones will be critical in determining the digital potential of railway networks, rail and transit network owners that invest in this technology will be the ones to guarantee digitalisation and the resulting future railway applications.

Our commitment to the rail industry
