MCX cables are traditionally used in applications that have display and camera signal interfaces, and in applications where dynamic movement is expected, such as through laptop hinges. Laptops, surveillance systems, AR/VR headsets, medical devices and drones all tend to rely on the unique characteristics of MCX cables.
MCX cables have a complex structure consisting of an inner multiwire core, insulation layer, spiral shield and outer jacket which are all precision controlled to meet stringent electrical and physical requirements. There are a wide range of gauges available which can be selected depending on your application, available space and mechanical requirements. MCX cables are typically bundled into wire harnesses with connectors at each end, which make them very easy to assemble into the final product and they can take on different forms as required by the application.
MCX cables can be combined with discrete wires to enable power and data transmission in the same “hybrid” cable harness. The harness can be made flat if the space requires so. Single MCX cables (or RF cables) are also commonly used for a single-ended interconnection between RF circuits terminated either by coax connectors or soldered directly to a PCB/FPC.
